actually, Super Mario Sunshine was probably a sequel to Luigi's Mansion, because in Sirena/ Serena Beach, a Pianta in the hotel said
"I wish someone with a vaccuum would come and suck up these ghosts. What? Why are you staring at me like that?"
If Super Mario Sunshine was a sequel to SM64, the Pianta wouldn't have said that.
Super Mario Galaxy is, presumably due to the lack of sequel pointers, a lone game, no prequels. And who knows, Nintendo may just make a Super Mario Sunshine 2..
